The 4 of July paddle to Blake Island was as memorable as all of the trips I've taken with ANEW, but in a different way. There is always amazing scenery, wildlife, food and company, but this trip also had fireworks! As we sat on the north beach of Blake Island in the dark, sipping wine and listening to the wildlife, I thought this was a perfect trip, with limited padling, but still feeling away from everything. Then the fireworks started!! First they were from private homes across the water and then the amazing displays from Seattle started!! I felt like a little kid again, not knowing which way to look and enjoying fireworks as if for the first time. We bemoaned the fact that none of us brought a radio to listen to the soundtrack, but in reality it would have been drowned out by our own "oohs and ahhs". It was the perfect way to enjoy the fireworks, the beautiful backdrop of nature (including an unexpected, but magnificent display of thunder and lightning), absolutely no crowds, and no traffic jam to get home! As we paddled back to the ferry landing the next day, we were already talking about scheduling for the next 4 of July!
The 8 gritty girls did Ross Lake for 4 days with Anew Outdoors. We have paddled most of the San Juans with Anew Outdoors, and welcomed the idea of fresh water travelling. The 4 day event was full of laughter, fun, sun and paddling. The guides were professional, safety oriented, thoughtful and great chefs. If you haven't considered this outing, do it today, you won't regret it!
